Work Detail Electricity minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has noted Kusile as a critical path to restoring South Africas electricity grid supply and demand balance. Speaking at the Association of Municipal Electricity Utilities (AMEU) 69th Convention on Monday, Ramokgopa said the restoration of more units at Kusile power station will help mitigate loadshedding but more must be done and that calculated risks must be taken to prevent intensified levels of blackouts. Kusile Power Station consists of 6 generating units with a capacity of 800MW each bringing the total installed capacity of 4,800 MW. The plant adopts supercritical-pressure technologies for more efficient generation of power than standard coal-fired systems, resulting in a significant reduction in COj emissions. "We should be focused on more than ending loadshedding. We need to meet the financial sustainability of municipalities and the decarbonisation agenda in the process. Kusile is taking big steps to reduce COj emissions and remains on track to meet its decarbonisation goals," said Ramokgopa. Commenting on the current state of the energy crisis in South Africa, Ramokgopa said accelerating energy projects is non-negotiable," with 66GW of wind and solar projects currently in development, there is no doubt that there is "strong appetite from private sector" to participate in solving the energy crisis.
