| Work Detail | Amazon continues to grow its presence in Illinois as it announced yet another planned facility to be located in the Chicago suburbs. Amazon said it will open a new fulfillment center in south suburban Monee, IL, where it plans to build a 850,000-square-foot facility that will hold "hundreds" of employees. The fulfillment center will be used to pack and ship small items like books, electronics and consumer goods to Amazon customers. “We place our fulfillment centers close to customers to provide the fastest possible delivery times, and the growth in Illinois is directly tied to our increasing customer demand,” Akash Chauhan, vice president of Amazon’s North America Operations, said in a statement. “Illinois is a great state to do business, and we are happy to be expanding there to serve customers.” The Monee facility is one of at least six planned or existing Amazon warehouses in and around Chicago. Amazon opened a Joliet facility last year, has announced plans to add a second Joliet location, and is also planning on a Romeoville warehouse. The online retail giant also has spaces on the South Side and on Goose Island. "We feel very fortunate that Amazon has decided to build another fulfillment center in Will County, bringing the total facilities here to four,” added Will County Executive Lawrence Walsh. “It’s very exciting to think that Amazon could soon be employing thousands and thousands of full-time employees in the area. We look forward to the Monee site opening.” News of the latest Amazon facility comes on the heels of the company's announcement that it will open a brick-and-mortar bookstore in Chicago next year. Amazon also announced it will open staffed Amazon package pickup locations at the University of Illinois at Chicago and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign this fall where students can pick up and return Amazon orders. |
