Ethiopia becoming a net exporter of wheat is an example of how technological advancement in agriculture coupled with targeted investment can transform a key sector in Africa.
This was pointed out by African Development Bank Group (AfDB) President Akinwumi Adesina during his opening remarks at the 7th Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation (KOAFEC) Ministerial Conference.
The Bank and Koreas Ministry of Economy and Finance are co-hosting the three-day conference.
It is being held under the theme "Embracing a Sustainable Future: Just Energy Transition and Agricultural Transformation in Africa."
The event kicked off in Koreas second-largest city, Busan, on Wednesday, September 13.
"Through our Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT), we have provided 12 million farmers with high-yielding varieties and technologies that are doubling yields for maize, rice, wheat and other crops.
"As a result of these efforts, Ethiopia expanded area under heat tolerant wheat varieties from 5,000 hectares in 2018 to 2.2 million hectares by this year, achieving wheat self-sufficiency and becoming a net exporter of wheat," said Adesina. |
