Pupils at Shantumbu Combined School in Kafue, Zambia, had never before experienced the dignity of having access to hygienic, modern ablution facilities or clean running water. However, this situation has been resolved with the help of the Ngonye Solar Farm.
Shantumbu Combined School in Zambia had a desperate need for hygienic ablution facilities to replace the rudimentary, unhygienic pit latrines that pupils had to use. The schools existing latrines posed a serious health and safety risk.
School pupils had to make do with unsanitary pit latrines and had nowhere to wash their hands. Not only had pupils from first grade up to twelfth grade used them, thereby increasing the chances of spreading germs, but the smaller children risked falling into the pit latrines and being exposed to many disease-causing pathogens, and sustaining injuries.
The 34MW Ngonye Solar Plant, currently operated by Enel Green Power, is located in Lusaka Multi-facility Economic Zone (LSMFEZ). The plant generates and feeds electricity energy into the national ZESCO grid.
The school is located in one of the communities surrounding the Ngonye Solar Plant.
Ablution facilities for health and safety
Using local labour and materials, such as stone from the local quarry, local contractor GIEVO Investments built a brand-new brick-and-mortar modern ablution facility for the school, working within specific guidelines to limit the impact on the environment.
The built structure is divided into three sections to accommodate pupils and teachers and to ensure privacy and safety. The girls facility has been fitted with five toilets, three wash basins and even a shower, which is particularly of value to pupils who do not have this facility at home. |
