At its Quilicura Distribution Center, in the Santiago Metropolitan region, Walmart Chile has inaugurated what is mentioned as the first green hydrogen plant at an industrial level in Latin America, a project developed together with the energy company Engie.

In a statement, it is assured that it is an investment of close to 15 million dollars, and that, in a first stage, it will allow the replacement of the lead-acid batteries of 200 forklifts with hydrogen energy cells.
According to the president and CEO of Walmart Chile, Cristián Barrientos, this action is part of the companys plan to expand the use of this technology in the rest of the distribution centers of the companys logistics network throughout the year. country, with the aim of operating 100% with hydrogen by 2025.
"We see tremendous potential for our business - said Barrientos, adding -: We want to expand the use of this technology to the rest of the distribution centers of the companys logistics network throughout the country, with the aim of operating 100% with green hydrogen. We are already exploring new uses in the areas of transportation and emergency services where we already have pilots in place.
For his part, the president and CEO of Walmart Inc, Doug McMillon, said: "Walmart first embraced the potential of hydrogen fuel in 2012, with a fleet of 50 vehicles and forklifts in the United States, which we have increased up to more than 9,500 forklifts. Now, with more than a decade of experience and progress, we are well-placed to invest in Chiles potential as a producer of clean energy, including green hydrogen."
In turn, the corporate manager of Corporate Affairs of Engie Chile, Pablo Villarino, assured that the company has created teams "100% dedicated to accelerating large-scale hydrogen projects, considering all levels of its value chain: from the generation from clean energy to the production of renewable hydrogen for industrial uses”.
"Thus -said Villarino-, the Engie Group has set itself the goal of having an installed capacity of 4 GW in renewable hydrogen by 2030 worldwide."
The inauguration ceremony was also attended by former President Michelle Bachelet and the Ministers of Finance and Energy, Mario Marce and Diego Pardow, respectively. |
