Work Detail German renewables developer PNE AG (ETR:PNE3) is joining forces with Hamburg-based energy trader SET Select Energy GmbH to develop a 1-GW green hydrogen project for e-fuels production on the west coast of South Africa. The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that outlines their strategic partnership, the purpose of which is to ensure the economically viable marketing of the green e-fuels to potential customers. PNE explained in a press statement that the retailer’s involvement in the project at this early stage supports its feasibility and ensures sustainability. The plan is to build a facility that can generate 500,000 tonnes of e-fuels per year from green hydrogen produced via electrolysis. PNE will rely on electricity from local wind farms and solar parks, as well as water sourced from the sea and passed through a desalination and demineralisation plant. The project is currently in the pre-feasibility phase, with PNE unit WKN Windcurrent and SET evaluating the logistic options and the availability of raw materials and products. "South Africa as a location for renewable energies and export logistics represents an advantage that makes e-fuels available to both local and international customers. We are pleased to accompany PNE as a trading and logistics partner in this exciting project,” said York zu Dohna, co-CEO of SET.
