A significant contract for the Barsham Water Treatment Works upgrades project in eastern Suffolk has been awarded to Farrans, in partnership with Essex & Suffolk Water. The ambitious £49.3 million undertaking aims to enhance the resilience and quality of drinking water for 75,000 customers of Essex & Suffolk Water. The project includes designing, supplying, and installing a new bore treatment stream at the treatment works site.
The project is scheduled for completion in 2025. The comprehensive upgrade project will feature essential elements to improve the water treatment process. This entails the construction of an interstage pumping station and a contact tank to manage the flow from the existing river works. There will also be a substantial underground reservoir with a capacity of 20 million litres.
This is as well as a high-lift pumping station to handle combined flows. These additions will significantly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of water treatment operations at Barsham Water Treatment Works.

The new process plant, part of the upgrade project, will be able to treat the full license of the main abstraction bores. It will thus extract groundwater from underground aquifers and the emergency chalk bore. Adjacent land will be used to construct the underground reservoir. As a result, it will ensure a reliable drinking water supply to customers in the towns of Beccles, Bungay, Lowestoft, and Southwold.
As part of the comprehensive upgrades, Essex & Suffolk Water will install new pumps, filters, tanks, and supporting facilities. This will help minimise disruption to neighbouring properties. This significant investment in Suffolk’s water supplies is set to ensure a resilient water supply for customers. It will also contribute to protecting local watercourses through enhanced borehole works. |
