Work Detail Libya is to construct a new power plant with a production capacity of more than I,OOOMW as it seeks to cover the increasing demand for electricity. The Libyan General Electricity Company (GECOL) president, Mohamed a I Mashai, signed a contract for the construction of the new plant, in Tripoli a few days ago. To be constructed in Zliten, a city in the western region, the plant will have a production capacity of 1,044MW. German company Siemens, UCC Holding Qatar and Al-Suwaidi Electric Egypt will construct the plant. The signing ceremony took place at the headquarters of the Government of National Unity in the presence of Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh. The company explained that the plant will include six units and should be completed within 26 months. The project has been valued at $1.29 billion. GECOL said this project is part of the companys plans to improve the overall grid situation and boost production capacity in line with energy demand. Last month, GECOL confirmed to local media that the generation capacity of power plants in Libya had reached a record 8,200MW - generation had never exceeded 6,000MW previously. GECOL said total energy generation is expected to reach 8,700 MW before the summer peak, and that current consumption ranges between 5,000 to 6,000MW, leaving a surplus of more than 2,000MW. The company said the reason for this generation surplus, was due to it having carried out a "large number of major overhauls, reaching 13 major overhauls," which were completed before entering the previous winter peak.
