Work Detail Solar energy is transforming how people access clean water in Zambia, where it is unaffordable to many households and diseases like cholera and diarrhoea are commonplace. In rural Zambia, home to around half of the countrys population, getting water through traditional hand pumps is the norm. Habitat for Humanity Zambia said that nearly half the population in rural areas remain without access to safe and clean water supplies and that women and girls are the most ad versel y affected. Two organisations that have implemented the use of solar water pumps in Zambias rural communities, say the technology reduces gueues and time needed for water collection, as well as providing reliable access to water. Danish company Grundfos, through its SafeWater business unit has partnered with World Visions Zambia WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) programme to provide solar water pumps as an alternative to the hand pumps. WASH said it has so far retrofitted 80 new solar powered pumps, reaching more than 20,000 people, and it is planning to reach several thousands more by 2030.
