Absolar estimates that, since 2012, the sector has attracted 125,000 million reais in new investment to the country, has generated more than 750,200 jobs and has avoided the emission of 33.4 million tons of CO2 in electricity generation.
Brazil has exceeded the mark of 25 GW of installed power from the photovoltaic solar source, adding the large plants and its own energy generation systems on roofs, facades and small plots, which is equivalent to 11.6% of the matrix electricity in the country
According to the mapping of the Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy (Absolar), since July last year, the solar source has grown an average of 1 GW per month: it had 16.4 GW accumulated in July, 17.5 GW in August, 18.6 GW in September, 21.1 GW in October, 22 GW in November, 23 GW in December, 24 GW in January 2023, and now Im getting to 25 GW in February.
Absolar calculates that this capacity has attracted 125.3 billion reais in new investment to the country, generated more than 39.4 billion reais in income for public coffers and accumulated more than 750,200 jobs. With this, the emission of 33.4 million tons of CO2 in the generation of electricity was also avoided.
According to Ronaldo Koloszuk, Chairman of Absolars Board of Directors, the accelerated growth of solar energy is a global trend. “Brazil has one of the best solar resources on the planet, which opens up a huge possibility for the production of the cheapest green hydrogen in the world,” he says.
“According to a study by the consulting firm Mckinsey, by 2040 Brazil could have a whole new electrical matrix for the production of green hydrogen. For this, the country should receive some 200,000 million dollars in investments in the period, such as electricity generation, transmission lines, fuel manufacturing units and associated structures, including port terminals, oil pipelines, storage, ”adds Koloszuk.

Brazil has some 7.8 GW of installed power in centralized solar plants, those large plants that meet the demand of distributors and consumers of energy in the free market. Since 2012, the large solar plants have contributed to the country close to 36,900 million reais in new investments and more than 233,000 accumulated jobs, in addition to providing a collection to the public coffers that exceeds 12,000 million reais.
Distributed generation
In the segment of own energy generation, there are 17.2 GW of installed power of solar origin. This is equivalent to some 88.4 billion reais in investments, 27.4 billion reais in tax collection and more than 517,200 accumulated jobs since 2012, spread across the five regions of Brazil. Solar technology is currently used in 99.9% of all self-generation connections in the country, leading the segment by far.
