Work Detail The Sharon Historical Society has recently completed a year of environmental monitoring of its buildings and collections, thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

The funding allowed the society to purchase a system of PEM2 dataloggers from eClimate NoteBook, and to hire a consultant who assisted the staff in the use of the equipment, evaluating and analyzing a year’s worth of data. The consultant compiled a report with recommendations for improving conditions in these areas.

Several steps recommended by the consultant have been accomplished, including installing dehumidifiers in the musty dirt-floored basement, which has made a tremendous difference for the ancient house and the historical collections.

NEH is an independent federal agency created in 1965. It is one of the largest funding agencies of humanities programs in the United States.

Because democracy demands wisdom, NEH serves and strengthens our republic by promoting excellence in the humanities and conveying the lessons of history to all Americans. The Endowment accomplishes this mission by awarding grants for top-rated proposals examined by panels of independent, external reviewers.

NEH grants are typically awarded to cultural institutions, such as museums, archives, libraries, colleges, universities, public television, and radio stations, and to individual scholars.

eClimateNotebook.com incorporates ease of use, powerful data analysis, and extensive data management features into one web-based product. This site combines the best features and functionality of IPI’s former data management websites, PEMdata.com and MyClimateData.com, as well as the society’s original desktop software, Climate Notebook.

The development of each of these tools was made possible by funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The Sharon Historical Society is grateful to the NEH for its support, members said in a written statement.
