CHESHIRE, CT – The Lane Construction Corporation, the U.S. subsidiary of Webuild Group, has been awarded a $236 million design-build contract for improvements to widen I-40 in Orange County, North Carolina.
This latest contract adds to Lane’s complimentary portfolio of major interstate and transportation improvement work underway in the Carolinas, one of Lane’s core geographic markets. In North Carolina, Lane is currently working on improvements to I-440/US 1 in Wake County and the I77/I-40 Interchange in Iredell County. It is also building an extension of NC-540, Triangle Expressway on a new alignment through Wake and Johnston Counties. In South Carolina, it has active operations on the I-85 Widening project in Cherokee County and the Port Access Road in Charleston.
The Orange County I-40 contract consists of 11 miles of road widening of I-40 from I-85 to the Durham County line with interchange modifications from four to six lanes (three lanes in each direction). Once completed, the project will relieve peak hour congestion and ease mobility between the existing I-85 interchange to the existing six-lane section at the end of the project. One of its environmentally sustainable features is the recycling of the existing concrete pavement into sub-base material for the new lanes, with the milled asphalt also to be recycled. Work is expected to begin in the fall of 2022 and be completed by end of 2025.
Consistently ranked as one of ENR’s Top Highway Contractors, Lane’s highway projects span across the United States. Current work outside of the Carolinas includes the I-10 Corridor Express Lanes project in Southern California; an express toll lanes project in Washington; and a tollway extension project in Williamson County, Texas. In Florida, it has ongoing operations on the Wekiva Parkway in Seminole County; Poinciana Parkway in Osceola County; and the Suncoast Parkway in Hernando and Citrus Counties. Earlier this year, Lane successfully delivered Florida’s Turnpike Widening project on budget and six months ahead of schedule. |
