A sub-project for sanitation in the outlying districts of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, has reduced the number of people affected by flooding, according to an AfDB Report.
The $39,8 million project was funded by a grant from the African Development Fund, the concessional window of the AfDB. The project objective was to facilitate the evacuation of rainwater and improve solid waste management in Ouagadougou.
The Bank’s Implementation Status and Results Report shows this target has almost been achieved after 7 years of implementation. The number of flood victims fell from 45,000 in 2009 to less than 9,000 in October 2019. In addition, the rate of garbage collection reached 67,2% in the capital city, according to the results of a survey conducted by the project team. They collaborated with the International Institute of Engineering of water and the environment (2IE) and the department in charge of cleaning at the town hall of Ouagadougou.

The sanitation project, which should be completed at the end of 2020, consisted of building a 3,885m Mogho Naaba canal linear. Also, the volume of the retention basis is now 240,000m3 versus the 154,000m3 originally planned. A further 17,362m3 of stormwater drainage canals have been built in sectors 16, 19 and 24 of the city.

Additionally, the project also made it possible to construct five crossing structures, rebuild 142 plots and cleand and project 3,000m of canal against siltation (water pollution caused by particulate terrestrial clastic material such as clay or silt). Almost all of the garbage collection centres have been equipped and brought up to standard (34 out of 35) and 20 collection and sorting centres have also been built and equipped.

In order to make the project sustainable, equipment has been provided to women’s associations. These include signs prohibiting littering and small equipment such as machetes, basins, brushes, small knives, pairs of boots and gloves, mufflers, wheelbarrows, rakes, shovels, forks, tarpaulins and watering cans. Other equipment provided to associations included pre-collection equipment, including an incinerator, a granulator, two crushers, impregnated mosquito nets and pharmacy boxes.
“With the exception of, among other thing, the development works of the Mogho Naba canal and its tributary of Gounghin South, nearly 98,2% completed, all works contracts are 10% completed. With the completion of the latest works, the development objective could be achieved,” concluded the AfDB report. |
