Work Detail The International Liquid Terminals Association (ILTA) has awarded CITGO Petroleum Corporation and MIPC, a subsidiary of Pennsylvania-based Monroe Energy, its Platinum Safety Awards. CITGO won the Platinum Award for a large company, defined as one with a minimum of 400,000 annual work hours, the equivalent of 200 full-time staff, while MIPC won the award for a small company, one with fewer than 200 full-time staff. Small companies must present evidence representing 200,000 work hours to qualify. ILTA also awarded the two companies a Five-Year Safety Milestone Award, given for sustained excellence in terminal safety. ILTA’s safety awards recognise outstanding safety performance in its terminal operating member companies. To achieve the Platinum Award, companies must achieve an average total recordable incident rate of 0.5 or less per 100 employees. A panel of their peers also review their company safety programmes. Companies using contracted labour must have a contractor safety management programme in place. The awards, which recognised the companies’ performance in 2019, will be presented at ILTA’s 40th Annual Operating Conference and Trade Show in Houston in November. ‘Safety is the terminal industry’s top priority. That’s why it’s so important to celebrate the impressive safety accomplishments of CITGO and MIPC, and we hope they will encourage all terminal operators to strive for continuous safety improvement. ILTA’s safety program not only allows us to measure our industry’s performance but also share success stories and learn from each other,’ says ILTA Chairman Kip Middendorf, who also serves as vice president and managing director of Wolf Lake Terminals.
