Work Detail With its Andhra Pradesh counterpart keen on finishing the fibre grid project at the earliest to provide high speed broadband connection to all households in the reorganised state, the Telangana government too has decided to put the process of setting up a similar fibre grid network on fast track mode.

The state government ordered all the contractors, who are laying pipelines for the water grid project under Mission Bhagiratha scheme, to fix the optical fibre cables in the water pipes itself. The reason is that unlike the AP government, which is using the overhead electrical lines to connect various villages/towns through the fibre grid, the TS government had already decided to go for a mix of underground fibre optic cables and laying of overhead lines across electric poles over land to set up the required network for the fibre grid.

As far as underground cabling is concerned, fibre optic cable is being laid along with water grid pipelines, under Mission Bhagiratha. “Hence, hereafter all the contractors who are undertaking Mission Bhagiratha works should ensure that fibre optic cable is inserted into the underground water pipelines,” chief secretary Rajiv Sharma ordered.

Otherwise, bills will not be paid to such contractors, officials said.

As water pipeline to an extent of 3,000 km has already been laid across different places in the state, optical fibre cables for the fibre grid will be laid through the overhead lines at these places.

Further, in its bid to obtain Centre’s clearances for laying of optical fibre cable and water pipeline in notified forest areas across the state at the earliest, the state government on Wednesday constituted a high-level committee. The committee will meet once a month and review the status of processing of all development projects requiring Centre’s clearance under Forest Act.

According to officials, delay in getting required permissions from the Centre in forest areas is adversely affecting the project. It is also leading to cost escalation. “Hence, the committee has been set up to monitor all projects requiring Centre’s approval under Forest (Conservation) Act 1980 and Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972 for the implementation of infrastructure projects. It will take steps to obtain final clearances from the Centre expeditiously,” state government principal secretary BR Meena said.
