Turkey plans to increase its defense and space exports from $ 2 billion to $ 10.2 billion by 2023, according to a government document revealed by the US website Defense News. The size of the Turkish defense industries grew more than 8 times in the year 2018, and the volume of defense exports reached two billion and 188 million dollars. The “Strategic Plan 2019-2023 ?, issued by the Turkish Defense Procurement Agency, aims to increase the annual revenues of the defense and space industry to $ 26.9 billion in 2023, from $ 6.7 billion in 2018. Also according to the plan, by 2023, domestic industry will meet 75 percent of military requirements compared to 65 percent in 2018. To achieve these goals, the government plans to restructure the defense export incentive system. Moreover, Turkey will launch a sales plan from one government to another, while the Turkish Defense Procurement Agency will open offices to promote defense exports in 20 countries. Other important goals detailed in the document include shifting to a new purchase model for importing weapons, prioritizing programs that reduce dependence on foreign systems; and supporting models that enhance Turkeys competitiveness in international high-tech markets. Since Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogans rise to power in 2003, he has made the development of the defense industry a long-term goal. Erdogan has significantly increased domestic input into defense purchases. The Turkish government has given priority to abandoning ready-made options, and resorting to the design and production of dozens of local programs including drones, naval ships, armored vehicles, helicopters, training aircraft and major battle tanks. In the context of the boom achieved by Turkey in the field of defense industries, four giant Turkish companies were able to enter the list of American Defense News magazine, which annually ranks the 100 best international companies in the field of defense industries. |
