| Work Detail | Deer Creek State Park will be getting some important facility upgrades thanks to a nearly $1 million grant. State Senator Bob Peterson (R-Washington Court House), who represents the 17th District that includes portions of Pickaway County, has announced the release of state capital funds for the park. The Ohio Controlling Board released a $984,480 grant this week to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) that’s earmarked for infrastructure and exterior upgrades near the park’s main lodge. The 2,337-acre resort park is located in Mount Sterling and covers portions of Pickaway and Fayette counties. Funding for the project was included as part of the state’s capital budget, approved by the Ohio General Assembly earlier this year. Planned improvements include replacing the lodge’s Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) components, which was originally installed in 1979. Additional upgrades are aimed at enhancing public safety. They include improving outdoor lighting and replacing the deteriorating retention walls around the pool and shuffle board courts. “We hope that these facility improvements will help to enhance the visitor experience for the thousands of families that take advantage of Deer Creek each year,” said Peterson, who sits on the Controlling Board. Deer Creek was cleared earlier month by the Pickaway County General Health District and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency from being the source of a shigellosis outbreak in Pickaway County. The agencies investigated after some visitors complained of diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps after visiting the park. Some people tested positive for shigellosis, however, extensive testing of Deer Creek’s water revealed no shigella bacteria. |
