Work Detail The delay in strengthening the highway connecting Banavara (Arsikere taluk) and Huliyar (Tumakuru) was one of the topics discussed at length during the district vigilance and monitoring committee meeting chaired by the former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, here on Thursday. The work to strengthen the road, which began in 2012, has been stalled for several months.

K.M. Shivalinge Gowda, MLA for Arsikere, raising the issue, said people in the village along the Banavara-Huliyar stretch of the National Highway 234 have been facing difficulty for years. “In some portions, the road has been dug up for strengthening. Vehicles cannot move on the road as the work is half-done. The company, which had bagged the contract, has stopped the work and moved court alleging disturbances by some people to proceed with the work,” he said. The MLA said that the contractor had to wind up his activities as he was not allowed to run a jelly crusher necessary for the road work.

Further, he said that the National Highways sub-division office situated in Tumakuru was handling the work. “As the office is in Tumakuru, the officials do not attend any review meetings here and we elected representatives do not get a chance to question them about the status of the work,” he added.

Mr. Deve Gowda, MP, who chaired the meeting, said he would soon convene a meeting to discuss about the pending works of the National Highways Authority of India in the district. “We shall call the Chief Engineer of NHAI for the meeting so that we can discuss all pending works,” he said. The elected representatives also expressed their worry over the delay in disbursing payment to people who worked under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. Mr. Shivalinge Gowda and others pointed out that the workers were forced to wait for two months to get their wages. Mr. Deve Gowda also wanted to know if the Union Government had cut the allocations under MGNREGA for the State.

ZP CEO R. Venkatesh Kumar said that there was a delay in the release of Central grants, forcing the delay in direct transfer of wages to the workers’ accounts.
