Work Detail As expected, this technology will satisfy global demand for protein feeds. Moscow, June 27 - IA Neftegaz.RU. BP, through its subsidiary British Petroleum Ventures, has invested $ 30 million in Calysta Inc., which manufactures protein feeds for animals using natural gas . This was reported by the company. In the near future, the new technology will meet the growing global demand for protein feeds for animals and fish through the production of the ecoprotein FeedKind by gas fermentation. By 2025, the world aquaculture market is expected to grow by 25% - FeedKind protein will replace other types of feed without a negative impact on the environment. What is this technology? During FeedKind production, bacteria are grown in a fermenter using methane as a source of carbon and energy. The result is the so-called “unicellular protein”, which is collected and dried before granulation - the process itself resembles the production of simple bread yeast. For interesting to note that the term "single-cell proteins» (single cell protein, SCP) appeared in 60 th years. It meant whole inanimate dried microbial cells (algae, yeast, bacteria, fungi), intended as a protein product for feed and food purposes. Note that this term has its own conventions, since in microbial biomass, in addition to proteins, a significant proportion is occupied by other components - sugars, lipids, nucleic acids. Unicellular protein must meet a number of special requirements, such as: nutritional value digestibility cost effectiveness. As a rule, the nutritional value of microbial protein, determined by chemical composition, is close to traditional protein products. In the future, BP investments will enable Calysta Inc. significantly expand protein production and enter the global market. Today, the production of protein FeedKind is already established in the UK, it is planned to cooperate with feed manufacturers in other countries of the world.
