Work Detail The Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) has announced that it has asked local and foreign companies to submit proposals to implement a smart-parking system in six parking-restricted downtown townships. The YCDC has set the deadline for submitting the proposals at 4pm on April 24. downtown-2.jpg The system will be put in place in the townships of Pazundaung, Bohtataung, Kyauktada, Pabedan, Latha, and Lanmadaw. The YCDC also announced that once the parking system is in place, parking fees of K200 an hour will come into effect. downtown-3.jpg Companies interested in submitting their proposals for running the parking system are required to obtain application forms from the Engineer Department in City Hall, Kyauktada township, during office hours starting from today. Although the YCDC had announced a tender for parking fee collection on the streets in the six downtown townships last October, no clear winner was selected and that tender was cancelled, said YCDC Committee Member Daw May May Thwe. downtown-4.jpg Earlier tender exercises had been called for parking fees to be collected in eight zones, however only five zones had winners and three zones had no winning bidders. Of the five zones that were successfully won, two bidders returned their tender awards for unspecified reasons. Although the tender was reissued for the remaining zones in the October exercise, no successful bids were received, the YCDC explained. downtown-5.jpg “In 2012, YCDC has begun extending the city’s street network and suspended the collection of parking fees as there were few cars at that time. However, lately, the number of cars in the city has risen greatly and traffic congestion has become a common occurrence due to indiscriminate parking. The setting up of a proper parking system and the collection of fees is hoped to bring about more disciplined parking in the city and hopefully reduce congestion,” said Daw May May Thwe. downtown-6.jpg Currently, the collection of parking fees is only carried out in privately owned and operated parking facilities in commercial developments and cinemas. No parking fees are beings collected along public streets in the downtown area of Yangon for the past three years.
