Work Detail Mexicos Neutral Networks is building a telecommunications border crossing between Monterrey and the US city of Laredo. The nearly 400km-long fiber optics link will connect a datacenter in Laredo, Texas, with Monterrey, capital of Nuevo León state and one of Mexicos main industrial hubs. "This a crossing that did not exist before and is the first for Nuevo León," said the companys deputy head of wholesale business, Gloria Palavicini. Construction should be finished by December, Palavicini told BNamericas in an interview, without disclosing investment figures. The company offers its services exclusively as a wholesale carrier of carriers transport network, in a similar way as the Red Compartida wholesale wireless network. "The carrier of carrier role allows for the expansion of infrastructure, so any service provider can use it without losing focus on its services. Operating a network requires massive investments and a level of specialization that can make a company lose focus," Palavicini added. RED COMPARTIDA AS A CLIENT Monterrey-based Neutral Networks claims to operate nearly 1,942km of dark fiber optic networks, mostly in the central-northern half of the country in the cities of Tijuana, Chihuahua, Saltillo, Monterrey, Ciudad Victoria, San Luis Potosí, Guadalajara, Querétaro and Toluca. Additionally, the company operates 258 telecoms towers in most of Mexicos territory as well as edge datacenters and distributed antenna systems (DAS). Red Compartida is one of Neutral Networks clients, renting dark fiber optics and towers in areas where the network provider has alternate routes, Palavicini said. The wholesale shared network operated by Altán Redes has said that it is employing shared infrastructure to increase its coverage as it looks to keep costs down. Neutral Networks is also looking to expand its Monterrey network, where it lists 140km of fiber optics. The objective is to reach Mexico City to connect clients in the cities where it already has a presence, Palavicini said.
