| Work Detail | Reconstruction of a small bridge will close Cromwell Harbor Road between Ledgelawn Avenue and lower Main Street for a few weeks beginning Sept. 6, town officials said. The road is scheduled to reopen Sept. 30. Cromwell Harbor Road crosses Cromwell Brook near the town’s wastewater treatment plant. Residents will be allowed access to properties, although there may be limited occasions during construction operations when access will be blocked temporarily. “There’s very little water running through there right now,” Public Works Director Chip Reeves said, “but there are brook trout in that brook. So there are fish passage requirements, and we’re only allowed to do the work between July 15 and October 15.” Stream crossings less than 20 feet wide are the town’s responsibility, he said, while bigger bridges are the purview of the state Department of Transportation. The existing bridge deck, guardrails, pavement and stone abutments will be removed. Some of the material will be reused elsewhere on the project, Reeves said. “They put in what they call silt dams – sandbags to control the flow of the brook. Then they build the new bridge on the outside of that.” The bridge itself will have two 10-foot travel lanes with one-foot shoulders. There also will be a five-foot sidewalk on the southern side of the bridge, where there is none now. R.F. Jordan and Sons was awarded the contract. Their bid was $273,255 for the project and $11,500 for replacement of a water line. A planned water service interruption is scheduled for either Sept. 8 or 9. The Water Division will notify affected customers 48 hours prior to when it is planned, Reeves said. “We’ll have to work it out with the contractor – it will probably be a number of hours.” The town was awarded a $95,000 grant from the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for the project. The Stream Crossing Public Infrastructure Improvements Grant “is what actually keeps the project in budget,” Reeves said. “We’ve applied for that grant before, and we finally got it.” Bruce Connery of Acadia National Park and Brian Hankel of the Wild Acadia Project helped with the DEP grant application, he said. The engineering design was done by CES. |
