The Ministry of Energy and Mines of Guatemala has published the new Rural Electrification Policy 2019-2032 defined by the Mining Energy Planning Unit.
According to the Guatemalan government in the document, the national electrification index has reached approximately 92.2% and, nevertheless, 1.5 million inhabitants of the Central American country continue to cover their energy needs through non-sustainable fuels such as firewood. .
Through this new policy, the aim is to improve the legal framework that allows the integration of rural electrification projects and at the same time expand technological alternatives such as self-generation of energy with photovoltaic systems, wind power, small hydroelectric plants, generators and water systems. Another objective of the government, in addition, is to guarantee universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services by the year 2030.
