Work Detail New Delhi: In what could be Goa’s first government building to have solar, wind and hydel energy to power itself, the upcoming Parivahan Bhavan — the new transport department headquarters — at Patto is paving the way for use of renewable energy in the state. The design for the new premises, which will use solar energy to supplement its electricals, water energy to cool the building and wind energy for ventilation, is in its final stages. The structure is thus expected to save around 60% energy, said officials from Rahul Deshpande and Associates, who is a consultant for the project. “We will make provisions for radiant cooling, a new method of air conditioning wherein water is passed through the floors to keep it cool. We will also use natural wind trapped via venturi effect for ventilation and solar energy to generate power in the building,” Deshpande said, adding that these methods have already been successfully implemented at a factory in south Goa. The Parivahan Bhavan is expected to be a citizen-friendly facility wherein the entire ground floor will have kiosks and touch screen gadgets to provide information. Transport department sources said two floors of the new building will cater to various transport-related services, while one separate floor will house the Kadamba Transport Corporation (KTC) headquarters which are currently in Porvorim. Five more floors will be dedicated to other government departments. “We have seen the design and suggested a few changes. Once the consultant submits the final plan, we will work out estimates and send the file to the government. After that, we will have to apply for various NOCs from town and country planning department, pollution control board, the Corporatios of the City of Panaji, electricity department, etc. Technical clearances have been sought from North Goa Planning and Development Authority, ” a transport official said.
