Work Detail Board also approves two-year bus service for Indiana State Feutz Contractors Inc. was awarded a contract to complete the second phase of Terre Haute’s First Street boulevard project. The Terre Haute Board of Public Works and Safety on Monday opened three bids on the project, with Feutz being the lowest bid at $270,181. Staff engineer Marcus Maurer reviewed the bids, saying Feutz was the lowest, complete and responsible bidder, recommending the company. The project will use dirt to cover rocks in the median along First Street where former CSX Transportation railroad tracks were removed. Tree wells will be added in the old rail bed between Farrington and Cherry streets. “Trees will go down to Oak Street, which is about half the trees for the project,” Maurer said. “There will be repairs to curbs and sidewalks and [we’ll] bring all the handicap ramps up to Americans With Disabilities Act specifications. We will have a set of turn lanes at Farrington Street and will have protect crossing median refuge at Farrington, Poplar and south side of Ohio. It is a beautification and pedestrian safety project.” In other road work, the board approved specifications for construction to improve the intersection of First and Hulman streets. “We are requesting to move this project forward to make this intersection safer and more efficient,” Maurer said, adding he hopes the board could open bids next month. The board set a special meeting for 9 a.m. on Oct. 15 to open bids for the project. “This will allow us to get bids in before the end of the year,” Maurer said. The First and Hulman project will remove a section of First Street between Hulman and Prairieton Road. The project will make Prairieton Road two-way for traffic, Maurer said. “We will rebuild the Hulman Street intersection so there is no longer the four-way stop.” In other business, the board approved a new two-year agreement, to start Aug. 1, with Indiana State University for bus service. The city will receive $252,600 for 2018-2019 (in two payments) and $258,915 for 2019-2020 (in two payments) from ISU. The rate is 2 percent higher than a previous two-year contract. The city will provide a dedicated ISU campus shuttle route to run through campus from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday, starting and ending at the city’s transfer center at the intersection of Ninth and Cherry streets. The city will also provide evening routes from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and regular routes will run from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. • The board also approved Riddell National Bank for financing three new ambulances to cost $819,264, through a loan with an adjustable interest rate of 3.69 percent for 5 years and a $182,429 payment per year. • The board also approved a contract for railroad crossing safety improvements at Washington Avenue between 14th and 15th streets. Maurer told the board 90 percent of the project will be paid from federal funds.
