Enel Green Power and Carnegie Clean Energy Limited signed an agreement to collaborate on research and development of the CETO 6 wave energy generator, under which Enel Green Power will invest about €1 million (US$1.16 million).
The new 1.5-MW CETO 6 unit will generate electricity from the kinetic energy of waves, leveraging on multiple moorings and power take-off modules potentially ensuring higher power output and competitiveness with other renewable technologies, according to a press release.
Activities under the agreement include the participation of Enel Green Power in the government-based Albany Wave Energy Project, which will deploy and test the first full-scale CETO 6 unit off the coast of Albany, Western Australia. The Albany project testing phase is expected to begin by the first half of 2020.
The new CETO 6 unit incorporates on-board power generation and multiple moorings and power take-off modules. Its nameplate capacity of 1.5 MW is a substantial increase from the 240-kW capacity of the CETO 5 unit.
The two companies also will work together to identify, develop and invest in new opportunities for CETO 6 across Australia, Europe and globally.
“Australia’s powerful marine waves represent one of the most attractive sources [of marine energy] available,” said Antonio Cammisecra, head of Enel Green Power. “The agreement with CCE, a company that has been active in marine energy research for a decade, allows us to leverage on one of the most disruptive energy generation technologies with good potential for further developments.”
Enel Green Power has a managing capacity of about 42 MW across a generation mix that includes wind, solar, geothermal and hydropower. Carnegie Clean Energy develops utility scale solar, battery, wave and hybrid energy projects. |
