Work Detail The Ontario Waterpower Association has partnered with Natural Resources Canada to advance the participation of women in the industry. OWA signed onto the Equal by 30 campaign at a recent Powering up Canada’s Energy Sector by Advancing Gender Equality event. According to the Equal by 30 website, women represent 35% of the clean energy workforce. “Gender equality is not a nice-to-have, but a must-have,” said the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, minister of Natural Resources Canada. “We will only achieve a cleaner energy future by ensuring that women are fully engaged.” Sohi says the government of Canada will continue to encourage more Canadian companies to join the campaign. “We are thrilled to be collaborating with NRCan to strengthen and support opportunities for women in the clean energy sector,” said Heather Ferguson, chair of OWA’s Board of Directors and vice president electrification development at Ontario Power Generation. “Collaborating in these important areas will help ensure we have the talent and diversity required to sustain and grow the waterpower industry.” OWA informs public policy in order to maintain, enhance and build opportunity for members of the waterpower industry in the Canadian province of Ontario. So what is Equal by 30? Equal by 30 is part of the Clean Energy, Education and Empowerment Initiative, which works to advance the participation of women in the clean energy transition and close the gender gap. It is a joint Clean Energy Ministerial and International Energy Agency initiative. The campaign is a public commitment by public and private sector organizations to work towards equal pay, equal leadership and equal opportunities for women in the clean energy sector by 2030. Equal by 30 asks organizations, companies and governments to endorse principles, then take concrete action to accelerate the participation of women in the clean energy sector and close the gender gap. Four countries have signed on to the campaign: Canada, Finland, Italy and Sweden. Four companies have made the commitments to “help move the dial”: Enedis, EDF, EDP and Edison. Other Equal by 30 signatories are: OWA, Canadian Urban Transit Research & Innovation Consortium, Canadian Nuclear Association, EDSO for Smart Grids, Student Energy, Analytica Advisors, Enerkem, NRstor, Ecotech Quebec, Ontario Power Generation, Bruce Power, CLP Holdings Limited, Enagas, Fortum, Vattenfall, Eon, Falck Renewables, Yingli Solar, Eskom, Unisun, Engie and Sweco.
