Work Detail The repaving of five borough streets will begin early next month, according to Chambersburg Borough Manager Jeffrey Stonehill.

Residents and commuters using King, Cumberland, Seventh, Highland and Eighth have endured a summer with the streets torn up and frequently closed, as borough work crews upgraded sewer mains, water mains, storm sewer infrastructure and gas lines in preparation for resurfacing.

"We try to use the opportunity of the resurfacing to address maintenance issues in advance," Stonehill said Monday.

It's all part of the planning process to prevent having to dig into recently resurfaced streets to fix a problem with that infrastructure, especially if it is aging or in less than optimal condition.

Stonehill said work on the five streets actually began last year, as is standard procedure before any street resurfacing project.

That work is almost finished and Stonehill expects the resurfacing work to be accomplished between Labor day and Oct. 15.

"Once exact dates are known, we will hand deliver notices to impacted properties," he said.

It is typical for paving work of this type to be done in the fall, according to Stonehill.

It is also typical for the borough to start a year in advance getting the streets ready for the resurfacing, mostly because of the time it takes to do the work replacing aging or deteriorating water and sewer mains, gas lines and storm sewers.

In fact, that routine paving preparation has already begun on several streets due for paving next year, including recent gas line work on Park Avenue, which is a 2017 resurfacing project.

Streets slated for resurfacing this fall include:

King Street from North Seventh Street to Grandview Avenue, at a cost of $690,301,
Cumberland Avenue from Cleveland Avenue to Stouffer Avenue, at a cost of $371,960,
Seventh Street from Washington Street to McKinley Street, at a cost of $194,234,
Highland Avenue from South Fourth Street to Cumberland Avenue, at a cost of $159,076,
Eighth Street from Lincoln Way East to Catherine Street, at a cost of $99,800.
Borough Council awarded a $1.5 million contract for this year's resurfacing projects to New Enterprise Stone and Lime Company Inc., Chambersburg, last February.
