Work Detail Burger baron Bob Johnson is expanding his B-Bop’s restaurant chain in the metro.

Johnson recently opened a store at 4500 Fleur Drive in Des Moines and will start construction next spring on a store in the Galleria at Jordan Creek commercial development in West Des Moines.

Johnson said he is finalizing details with West Des Moines city planners concerning style and exterior color combinations for the new store on Stagecoach Drive just off Mills Civic Parkway. The shop will sit north of the Ethan Allen furniture store.

Zoning requirements in that area call for B-Bop's and other projects to have specific design elements including stucco siding, arches and earth tone colors, said Linda Schemmel, West Des Moines city planner. B-Bop’s familiar bright blue and yellow awning will have to be modified to accommodate the requirements, she said. Johnson said architects are working on design plans incorporating those elements that he expects to present to city officials in the next few weeks.

Altering the outside of the building from its traditional look shouldn't deter B-Bop’s customers. “I don’t think it will be an issue,” he said. "People will be able to find us." He is hoping to include a bright blue stripe on some part of his sign and will retain the classic yellow umbrellas at the outside tables.

The West Des Moines location also will have a single drive-thru lane, which is a departure from the double lanes at most of his other locations. The store will have seating for 48 inside and additional seating at eight tables on an outdoor patio. Construction could begin in March and be completed by July, he said.

Johnson said he has few worries about national chain Five Guys Burgers and Fries coming in mid-November to the Paradise Pointe retail center down the street. "They are more of a fast-casual restaurant and are more expensive," he said.

Johnson also will open a store at 3815 N.E. 14th St. in Des Moines where Fazoli's restaurant used to be. The new store will replace his original store at nearby 1500 E. Euclid Ave. The new restaurant will have a double drive-thru lane, seating for 48 inside and more outside on the patio.

With the opening of the Galleria restaurant, Johnson will have nine stores in the metro. He is scouting other locations in the metro and is considering locations in Waukee. The company now has one franchise location in Ames and eight company-owned stores in Des Moines, Windsor Heights, Urbandale, Altoona and Ankeny.
