Procurement News Notice

PNN 10236
Work Detail Hunter village water customers will need to cut back on water consumption after the village issued a mandatory conservation notice Wednesday.
Village Water Department Chief Operator Joe Myers said the notice was issued because the village’s primary water supply is becoming depleted.

The drought that has spread over the region since last winter is taking a toll on the village reservoir, Myers said.
"The main problem has been a lack of precipitation," Myers said. "We don’t have much of a reservoir and our primary water source is running a little low."
In the notice, the water department instructed customers to decrease water consumption by shortening time spent showering and watering gardens, and told customers to stop watering their lawns - except newly seeded areas - stop washing cars and refrain from filling swimming pools.
Myers said the notice was designed to make water customers aware of the developing shortage and be more conscious of their water use.
"Mostly, it’s just to keep people thinking about conservation," Myers said. "If they’re remembering the shortage they will probably use less water and it will help prevent a serious shortage."
The department said water use can be reduced by fixing leaky faucets and toilets, and by running appliances like washing machines and dishwashers when loads are full. The department said non-residential users should also review their water use and cut back where possible.
With rain unlikely in current projections for the next seven to 10 days, the developing shortage is unlikely to be alleviated in the immediate future. But the village is not at risk of running out of water.
"We do have alternative water sources we can use, which are wells," Myers said.
But due to environmental factors, making well-water potable is more time-consuming and costly for the village.
"They’re kind of difficult to treat, so they’re typically our last resource," Myers said.
Myers said ultimately the solution will be rainfall for the mountaintop.
"What we’ve been missing is rain and hopefully we’ll get some soon," he said.
But soon may be far off, according to the National Weather Service in Albany.
Apart from a few isolated thunderstorms expected to rumble through the area on Saturday ahead of a slowly advancing cold front, forecasters said the next seven days will be mostly sunny and dry with temperatures gradually sliding from the mid- and upper 80s to the low to mid-70s.
