The Mendoza government has launched a public bidding process for the construction of a new bridge over the Mendoza River on Provincial Route 15, between the cities of Luján and Perdriel. This project will replace a 127-year-old structure, with an official budget of $14.7 billion and an estimated construction time of 20 months. The intervention is part of the use of funds from the Industrial Promotion Compensation program, originally earmarked for the canceled Portezuelo del Viento project. The project was announced by the governor during the last Legislative Assembly and has already been officially published in the provincial Official Gazette. The opening of the envelopes is scheduled for July 8, when the financial proposals from interested companies will be announced. From a technical standpoint, the new bridge will replace the old road bridge, originally built of metal and wood and dating back to 1898. This historic bridge, the first road bridge in the province and the third in the country, has undergone successive renovations, most recently in 1990, but is currently too heavy for heavy traffic and cannot accommodate buses or trucks. The new structure will solve a critical connectivity problem in the area: bus lines currently must divert their routes onto alternative routes, which entails an increase of 276,000 kilometers annually. With the project completed, a significant reduction in travel distances is expected, optimizing the use of resources and reducing expenditure on transportation subsidies, which currently cover 80% of the cost per kilometer traveled. The Provincial Highway Department will be responsible for overseeing the progress of the works, whose impact is expected to improve vehicular traffic, road safety, and the efficiency of regional public transportation. |
