Work Detail Each has 21.87 MW of installed capacity. These are Hoyo Colorado (in the province of Matanzas), Mal Tiempo (Cienfuegos), and La Carolina (Ciego de Ávila). They are part of the national plan, which calls for the construction of 55 solar parks this year, and so far have connected nearly 261.6 MW to the SEN (National Electricity System), of the 1,200 MW planned. In recent days, three new photovoltaic solar parks have been inaugurated in Cuba, adding 65.6 MW to the national electricity system, following the entry into operation of the Hoyo Colorado, Mal Tiempo and La Carolina parks, all with 21.87 MW of installed capacity, within the framework of the plan that foresees the construction of 55 solar parks during 2025 . Thus, 12 facilities are now operational under the aforementioned plan, bringing the solar capacity connected to the National Electricity System (SEN) to 261.6 MW within that framework. In total, according to recent data from the Electricity Union (UNE), the Cuban grid operator, there are 16 solar parks on the island totaling 440 MW of power. The Hoyo Colorado photovoltaic solar park, located in the municipality of Martí, Matanzas province, is now synchronized with the National Electricity System (SEN) and in the final testing phase. The Mal Tiempo solar park, located in the municipality of Cruces, Cienfuegos province, represents the third large-scale park in that province and is claimed to operate under the same technological parameters as the rest of the national program, with structures capable of withstanding winds of up to 280 km/h and remote monitoring systems to optimize its operation. Finally, the La Carolina solar park in Ciego de Ávila was inaugurated—like the previous ones—in a context of energy crisis marked by prolonged blackouts and fuel shortages. Among the first parks to enter into operation this year are the School of Nursing (Havana) , Mayor (Cienfuegos), La Sabana (Granma), Mango Dulce (Artemisa), Remedios (Villa Clara), La Corúa (Holguín), Jovellanos (Matanzas), Ciego Norte (Ciego de Ávila) and Las Guásimas (Santiago de Cuba). The program calls for the synchronization of five new solar parks each month, although the pace of construction and commissioning depends on factors such as resource availability, component import logistics, and the conditions of the national electricity grid. Furthermore, only four of the planned facilities will have battery storage systems, limiting solar input to daylight hours in most projects. Cuban authorities have indicated that the plan for 55 solar parks is part of a broader strategy that envisions the construction of 92 parks by 2028, with the goal of providing more than 2,000 MW of power to the SEN. The development of these projects is being carried out in collaboration with Chinese companies, both in the supply of technology and financing.
