The Mendoza Government, through the General Department of Irrigation, has launched a new call for bids to modernize the Calise Canal irrigation system, located in the upper Tunuyán River basin. The project is part of the Master Plan for the Water Sector and will be financed with resources from the Industrial Promotion Compensation Fund. The decision to launch a new bidding process was made after the bids submitted in the first call for proposals were declared inconvenient, as they significantly exceeded the official budget. In this new round, the budget was revised from $5,793,800,000 to $6,212,700,000. The planned works include the construction of a 40,000 m³ reservoir, the comprehensive intervention of the Calise main canal—including a sand trap, flow chamber, culvert, divider, and connection to the reservoir—and the reinforced concrete lining of 19 kilometers of secondary canals, or canal ditches. The installation of measurement systems (gauging) for each ditch is also planned, with the aim of accurately controlling the distributed flows. The irrigation system begins at the Valle de Uco dam with the Consulta Canal, lined until it meets the San Carlos Stream via a canal bridge. From there, it becomes the Calise Canal, with an initial unlined section of 2,800 meters, branching into three sections, each measuring between 4 and 5 kilometers. These canals, built on natural terrain, suffer high infiltration losses due to the soil characteristics and the low slopes of the area. With an estimated completion time of 18 months, the project seeks to optimize water use on 725.6 hectares. The addition of the reservoir will allow for more efficient irrigation management, enabling irrigation runs of up to 15 hours at maximum flow and an additional 10 hours at an average flow of 300 liters per second. The project aims to improve equity in water distribution among users located at different points in the system, reducing losses and shortening conduction times. The Uco Valley Main Canal Channel Inspection Center, Right Bank, will also be provided with physical and measurement tools that will allow for flexible, regulated irrigation adapted to the regions production needs.
