Baltics largest wind project to supply 1TWh a year Ignitis Renewables has fully commissioned the 314MW Kelme wind farm, the largest wind project in Lithuania and the Baltic States. The wind farm will generate around 1TWh of electricity annually—equivalent to one month of Lithuania’s power demand or enough to supply 250,000 homes. “This is a landmark for Lithuania’s green transition,” said Ignitis Group chief executive Darius Maikštenas. Built in two phases, the site now hosts 44 Nordex N163/6.X turbines, each up to 240m tall, making them the most powerful wind turbines ever installed in Lithuania. The first 16 turbines (114MW) came online in April 2025, while the remaining 28 turbines (200MW) began commercial operations this month. Total investment in the wind farm reached €550 million, positioning it as a flagship in Ignitis Group’s 4–5GW renewable strategy for 2030. Located in Kelme district, the site strengthens local grid stability and reduces reliance on imported electricity. “This shows the energy transition is already happening here,” said Kelme district mayor Ildefonsas Petkevicius. Ignitis has also provided €192,000 in voluntary financial support to eight nearby communities. Projects funded include community centre upgrades, new heating systems, lighting, and sports infrastructure. “We aim to be good neighbours,” said Ignitis Renewables Lithuania head Giedrius Meškele. “In the future, we’ll begin paying a generation fee of €1/MWh.” Ignitis said it will continue to offer annual funding for local projects and already supports cultural and educational events in the region. The company has also awarded contracts to local businesses, including road maintenance and groundskeeping, contributing to long-term economic benefits. |
