Portugals national grid operator Redes Energeticas Nacionais (REN) announced on Monday that 77% of the countrys electricity consumption in May was supplied by renewable power plants.Solar power accounted for 17% of the total, a new record for this renewable source. This type of power plants also exceeded 3,000 MW for the first time in May. Non-renewable production and imported energy covered 16% and 7% of the remaining consumption, respectively. Year to date, renewable sources supplied roughly 83% of the consumption, with hydropower being the largest contributor, meeting 40% of the overall demand. Wind power covered 27% in the same period, followed by solar photovoltaic (10%) and biomass (5%). According to data from REN, natural gas production supplied 12% and imports covered 6% of Portuguese consumption. Portugals electricity consumption increased 1.8% year over year since the beginning of the year. |
