Dutch energy storage company GIGA Storage has started building a 300-MW/1,200-MW battery in the Netherlands after closing on a roughly EUR-300-million (USD 341.2m) funding deal for the project. The financing for the GIGA Leopard scheme was arranged as a “club deal” with a consortium of eight European lenders, the developer said on Monday. The battery energy storage system (BESS) will be located at the site of the former Aldel aluminium smelter in Delfzij, Groningen province, and in proximity to a major offshore wind power production hub. The facility will be connected to TenneT’s high-voltage grid through an existing substation. Under a deal signed last summer, the battery will have the right to take electricity from the grid or feed it back in at least 85% of the time. GIGA Leopard is expected to be commissioned in the second half of 2027. The system will have the capacity to deliver renewable energy to all Dutch households for more than half an hour. GIGA Storage is majority-owned by French private investment firm InfraVia Capital Partners. The company was last year permitted to build what it says will be Europes largest BESS site – 600-MW/1,200-MWh battery in Belgium known as GIGA Green Turtle. (EUR 1.0 = USD 1.137) |
