Work Detail As Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) such as rooftop solar panels, battery storage systems, electric vehicles, and microgrids increasingly enter the Philippine power landscape, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) is ramping up efforts to transform its distribution grid. Backed by businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan, Meralco is investing heavily in advanced technologies to enable multi-directional energy flows and support the country’s clean energy transition. Speaking at the Berde Renewables Collaboration Summit 2025, Meralco First Vice President and Head of Networks Froilan J. Savet emphasized the company’s commitment to grid modernization. “Meralco is modernizing its grid to support the significant integration of renewable energy at its distribution system,” said Savet. “We are not just distributing power to homes and businesses. We are now enabling a clean, flexible, and intelligent energy system toward a decentralized grid.” DERs, which include small-scale solar systems, home and commercial battery units, EV chargers, and microgrids, are changing the traditional utility-consumer relationship. These technologies allow consumers to become energy producers, introducing two-way electricity flows that can enhance grid reliability, reduce costs, and support decarbonization goals. However, they also present new technical challenges, such as voltage fluctuations and coordination issues, which require advanced grid capabilities. To manage these challenges, Meralco has introduced a 4-I strategy: Integration, Innovation, Intelligence, and Interoperability. Integration ensures each new DER installation strengthens rather than destabilizes the grid. Innovation involves deploying advanced technologies such as battery energy storage systems (BESS), grid-forming inverters, and localized microgrids. Intelligence leverages artificial intelligence for real-time system monitoring, faster response times, and improved forecasting. Interoperability focuses on standardized protocols, device compatibility, and robust cybersecurity to ensure seamless system operations. In addition, Meralco is investing in workforce upskilling to manage a more complex, digitalized grid. The company is also collaborating with policymakers and regulators to align its transformation roadmap with national energy and climate objectives. “The energy transition is already happening,” Savet noted. “The challenge for utilities is how quickly they can adapt to changes in the energy landscape while maintaining grid stability and reliability. At Meralco, we’re not just preparing for it—we’re enabling it.” As the number of DERs grows in the Philippines, Meralco’s forward-thinking initiatives in AI, storage, and interoperability are setting the stage for a decentralized and cleaner energy future.
