Amprion has laid the foundation stone for a new converter station in Lingen, Lower Saxony, to support the DolWin4 and BorWin4 offshore grid connection projects. Both projects are scheduled to be operational by 2028. The two connections will integrate 1.8 GW of offshore wind capacity into the electricity grid at Lingen. The converter station is being built in the Lingen industrial park, near the Hanekenfähr substation. It will convert direct current from North Sea wind farms into alternating current for feeding into the transmission grid via the new Hilgenberg switchgear and overhead lines. Siemens Energy is the main contractor, and construction is expected to take two to three years. The DolWin4 and BorWin4 systems each include submarine and underground cables. The offshore cables run 60 and 125 kilometres from the wind farms to the mainland, passing beneath the island of Norderney. From the coast, the lines continue another 155 kilometres underground to Lingen, where they will connect to Amprion’s grid. |
