Solar off-grid sales in West Africa dominated by Nigeria

Sales of off-grid solar products in west Africa are dominated by Nigeria, with 82°/o of total units sold in the region in the second half of 2022, taking place in the country. Sales of key appliances (which have reached mainstream levels of production such as TVs, fans, refrigeration units and solar water pumps) were 5% lower than in the first half of the year, but still 14% higher than the second half of 2022. Key appliance sales in the West Africa region account for 64% of Sub-Saharan Africa sales. This region has overtaken East Africa for total key appliance volumes of sales. "West Africa has a more dynamic fan market than East Africa, which is a leading factor," says GOGLA in their latest Global Off-Grid Solar Market Report: Semi-Annual Sales & Impact Data which covers the time period July-December 2023. The number of fans sold across West Africa in the second half of 2023 increased by 9%. Of these, 92% were bundled with a power system, generally a solar home system. The vast majority of fan sales in the region took place in Nigeria. "Fan sales only include pedestal fans at 72,514 units sold, and table fans at 86,062 units sold, while there were no ceiling fan sales reported," read the report. Results based financing making a difference in Nigeria Between 2019 and 2022, the Nigerian Electrification Program (NEP) drew on its $75 million results-based financing facility. This played a key role in accelerating solar energy kit sales in what was then a largely untapped market. "While support from the NEP did lead to significant increases in sales over the period it was active, issues with the fund have meant that the RBF scheme was unable to honour payments due to companies that made eligible sales. It may take time to understand the full impact of these issues for some companies," Gogla explained in the report. Nigeria

Worlds largest electric container ship launched by China

China has launched what it claims to be the largest electric container ship with a 50,000kWh+ battery capacity. Shanghai-headquartered China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO) launched the 120 metres long, 24 metres wide and 10,000 ton Shipping Green Water 01 recently. The transportation and shipping company has offices in several countries, including in South Africa. Last March, the company said: "The 700 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) electric container ship is the worlds first large all-battery container ship for long-distance transport." A second electric container ship by the company has also been in the works since May 2023. Smart mobility on the water COSCO says the vessel carries an intelligent ship system consisting of integration platform, navigation, cabin and energy efficiency. "It is the worlds first electric container ship in terms of overall length, width, number of boxes, dwt (deadweight ton) and battery capacity. The ship adopts battery-powered propulsion for the whole voyage." China

Public and private finance to deal with climate crisis

Patrick Mwesige, Managing Director - Kanara Solutions, spoke to ESI Africa editor Nicolette Pombo-van Zyl at Enlit Africa about the realities of securing climate finance. "Its not actually climate finance, its generally finance. The money is actually available but getting bankable project... to invest in, is the challenge," said Mwesige. Listen to the Kanara Solutions head talk about setting up viable financial ecosystems and managing risk in Africa. South Africa

Electricity restored to parts of Joburg affected by cable theft

Around 70°/o of residents in greater Johannesburg who have been without electricity since last Tuesday night due to a fire caused by cable theft, have been reconnected. Vandals made off with about 300 metres of copper cable. The incident sparked an underground fire along the Ml near Smit Street and the double-decker section between Braamfontein substation and Fordsburg substation. Utility City Power said that after managing to restore power supply to a section of Parktown West just after midnight on Wednesday, it is now in the process of reinstating the electricity supply in parts of Braamfontein. "The process of restoring supply is being phased in gradually to avoid overloading the system and inadvertently triggering a power trip. "This is part of the continuous efforts that are unfolding parallel to the work of replacing the burnt and stolen cables, which will admittedly take a bit longer to complete," said City Power. A new 88KV (kilovolt) cable has been laid inside the 1.2 kilometre tunnel beneath the Ml highway in Braamfontein. Efforts underway to restore electricity to other affected areas in Joburg The widespread outage triggered by acts of vandalism affected customers in Parktown, Newtown, Braamfontein, the Johannesburg CBD and surrounding areas. "As part of the ongoing efforts to restore supply to customers affected by the Ml tunnel fire incident, the entity would like to notify customers in the surrounding areas that there will be brief intermittent power supply interruption of not more than 30-minutes.
