Tenders are invited for Large Input Voltage Range Gan BDR for Primary Batteries Expro+. Objectives Explore topologies based on GaN switches and digital control to discharge primary batteries down the minimum possible voltage. The objective is to maximise the use of the energy in primary batteries. Build a breadboard with the most promising option and test its performance. Description Primary batteries have very high energy density but they cannot be recharged. Thus, itsmain use is for one-time use cases, for instance, landers or launchers.Typically a lander will not have any solar array so its only energy source is a battery. Sincethey will not be recharged, primary batteries make total sense. To extract the maximum amount of energy, the battery voltage will go down as the currentis taken out. The lower you go in voltage, the more energy you extract. However, decreasing the voltage has serious implications for the power system. In general, DC/DC converters operate at high efficiency levels in a narrow input voltage range. Moreover, the topologies will limit the maximum and minimum input voltage, which meansthat, in mostcases, the DC/DC converter used to discharge the battery will limit the operation and the performance. This activity aims at exploring DC/DC converter topologies that can operate through largeinput voltage ranges with high performance. Efficiency is also very important in lander applications since it is paramount to waste as little energy as possible. There are topologies that can operate through larger ranges that have not been used inspace applications so far and can be adopted easily. Moreover, new GaN switchesimprove the efficiency of the system and, if controlled by means of digital devices, complexenergy management systems can be built. Thus, multiple stages could be connected insuch a way that the optimum operation point is always at reach. The activity aims at building a breadboard of a high efficiency, high input voltage rangeDC/DC converter with GaN switches and digital control. The breadboard will be tested toverify the performance. Read less Tender Link : https://esastar-publication-ext.sso.esa.int/ESATenderActions/filter/open
