Tenders Are Invited For Plastic Caps – Supply Of Manufacturing Polymethyl Methacrylate Domes With Very High Transparency To Ultraviolet Light By Thermoforming To Obtain Anti-Implosion Covers For 20-Inch Photomultipliers For The Hyperkamiokande Experiment.
Plastic Caps – Supply Of Manufacturing Polymethyl Methacrylate Domes With Very High Transparency To Ultraviolet Light By Thermoforming To Obtain Anti-Implosion Covers For 20-Inch Photomultipliers For The Hyperkamiokande Experiment.. Hyper-Kamiokande (Hk) Is The Project To Build An International Neutrino Telescope, An Evolution Of The Kamiokande And Super-Kamiokande Detectors. The Hk Detector Will Be Built 620 M Underground, In Order To Observe Neutrinos, Proton Decay And Other Physical Phenomena. The Experiment Will Be Carried Out In A Huge Cylindrical Water Tank, ~70M In Diameter And ~70M Deep, Filled With A Megatonne Of Extremely Transparent “Ultrapure Water”, On Whose Walls Will Be Installed Tens Of Thousands Of Photosensors (Photo-Multiplier Tubes, Pmts From Now On) Sensitive To The Light Known As Cherenkov Light Produced By Particles, Such As The Neutrino, When Interacting With Water. Spain Participates In This Great Research Infrastructure And Does So Through The Lsc Consortium, Which Will Be In Charge Of Coordinating And Developing Spanish Participation In The Construction Of The Hk Neutrino Detector, Which Includes The Financing Of New Projects And Actions To Be Carried Out At The Hk, For The Design, Manufacture And Installation Of Photomultiplier Protection Capsules. To This End, An “Anti-Implosion” Cover Has Been Developed For Each Of The 20-Inch Pmts Of The Hk Experiment, Composed Of Two Parts Joined Together: The First, Made Of Steel, Which Covers The Rear Part Of The Pmt; And The Second, Made From Sheets Of Polymethyl Methacrylate With Very High Transparency To Ultraviolet Light (Pmma Uvt), Which Is Located In The Front Part Of The Pmt And Must Be Transparent To The Cherenkov Photons That It Is Intended To Detect With It. The Ultraviolet Transparency Of The Pmma Uvt Dome Is, By Far, The Most Important Parameter That Determines The Functionality Of The Protective Cover For The Hk 20 Pmt. This Is Why, In Addition To Starting From A Pmma Uvt Sheet Of Excellent Transparency, Which Has Been Produced Explicitly To Satisfy The Transparency Needs Of The Hk Project, A Transformation Process Is Required Until The Production Of The Dome That Reduces Said Transparency To The Essential Minimum. This Is Why The Transformation Process That Has Been Validated Until The Date Is By Thermoforming, Where The Pmma Uvt Sheet Is Heated To A Temperature Where It Can Be Deformed By An Overpressure Of Air, Until It Reaches The Necessary Geometry Set For The Dome. Throughout The Process, And Particularly During The Heating And Forming Process, It Must Be Avoided, In Any Way, That Dust Or Any Other Type Of Impurity Can Adhere To The Surface Of The Formed Dome, Causing A Potential Reduction Of The Initial High Uv Light Transparency Of The Sheet. Of Its Transparency, Another Crucial Factor For The Survival Of More Than 10 Years Of Data Collection From The Hk Experiment Is The Mechanical Resistance Of The Protective Covers. The Lsc Has Carried Out Validation Tests.
