Alinta Energy, Parkwind to develop 1GW offshore wind farm in Australia

The project is expected to inject up to $1.04bn (A$1.59bn) into the regional economy during the construction phase. Australia’s Alinta Energy has partnered with Parkwind, a subsidiary of JERA Nex, to jointly develop the more than 1GW Spinifex Offshore Wind Farm in south-west Victoria, Australia. Under the agreement, Alinta Energy and JERA Nex, the newly formed renewable energy company of Japanese utility JERA, will utilise their respective expertise and capabilities to develop the Spinifex project. To be located in the Southern Ocean Region Declared Area off of Victoria’s coast, the wind farm is expected to generate enough power for 650,000 homes annually. The site has been selected and the parties are actively engaging with local stakeholders to advance the project. A local supply chain and industry development study conducted last year highlighted the potential economic impact of the Spinifex Project. As per the study, the project is expected to inject up to A$1.6bn into the regional economy during the construction phase and contribute A$40m annually once operational. Alinta Energy CEO and managing director Jeff Dimery said: “JERA and Parkwind both have a great track record in offshore wind and have pioneered some impressive engineering and construction techniques. We love that spirit and the launch of JERA Nex, bringing the two companies’ renewable expertise together, is exactly what we will need in Australia to build a new industry from the ground up. “The other thing that attracted us to JERA Nex was its shared vision for ensuring the project benefits communities in south-west Victoria.” JERA Nex Development & Construction Offshore vice-president and Parkwind co-CEO Francois Van Leeuw said: “There is huge potential for offshore wind in Australia and we are confident that the combination of Alinta Energy’s local expertise and experience and our offshore credentials provide a strong foundation for this project. “We are looking forward to working closely with the local community to bring clean, sustainable energy to Australian homes and businesses.” JERA Nex, with Parkwind at its core, brings extensive experience in offshore wind development and establishing supply chains in emerging markets. The company manages seven wind farms globally, including in Belgium, Germany, the UK, Japan and Taiwan, and has a substan Australia

Volue extends partnership with Iberdrola for power scheduling and algo trading

The new software packages will be installed on several of Iberdrola’s wind farms, including the 350MW Wikinger offshore facility. Volue has signed a deal to provide Spanish energy major Iberdrola with two energy trading software solutions for use in the German and French energy markets. Iberdrola will be using two of Volue’s major software packages – DeltaXE and Volue Algo Trader Power – to help strengthen its position in the European markets. According to a press release, DeltaXE, Volue’s trade and logistics solution, “serves as a real-time position management solution capturing all trades and positions across all markets, supporting the scheduling and nomination processes with integration to most European power and gas markets”. The software will assist in Iberdrola’s trading activities across France and Germany. Meanwhile, Volue Algo Trader Power, which is already used by more than 70 companies across Europe, “automates continuous intraday power trading” using “parametrizable algorithms” to create an automated and stable trading platform. The new software packages will be installed on several of Iberdrola’s wind farms, including the Wikinger offshore facility, which forms part of the company’s German portfolio. The 350MW wind farm was the first offshore wind farm to be entirely designed and operated by a Spanish company. Volue CEO Trond Straume said: “This new partnership for the provision of our energy trading software provides an end-to-end solution to empower Iberdrola to achieve increased levels of automation and reliability in its trading endeavours.” Iberdrola has seen success in recent months, announcing today that its first-quarter net profit has skyrocketed to €2.76bn ($2.96bn), an 86% increase from the previous year. However, the company has also seen its total revenue for the quarter decline by 18% overall from its position a year ago, due in part to a 10.7% decrease in the company’s installed capacity. Spain

Ørsted inaugurates Greater Changhua 1 and 2a offshore wind farms in Taiwan

Located 35–60km off the coast, the two wind farms are powered by 111 Siemens Gamesa SG 8.0-167 turbines. Danish renewable energy company Ørsted has officially inaugurated the 900MW Greater Changhua 1 and 2a offshore wind farms, located off the coast of Taiwan. These installations have successfully doubled Taiwan’s offshore wind power generation capabilities. The inauguration event took place at Ørsted’s operations and maintenance hub in the Port of Taichung. Guests attending the event included Taiwan’s President, Tsai Ing-wen, and Minister of Economic Affairs, Wang Mei-hua. Also present were stakeholders from CDPQ and Cathay PE, local suppliers and financial institutions. President Tsai Ing-wen said: “It took us eight years to turn the words ‘energy transition’ in our policy papers into actual wind farms in operation. Taiwan now has Asia-Pacific’s largest offshore wind farm and our own offshore wind supply chain.” The journey to completion began in November 2019 with the construction of the onshore substation. In December 2020, Ørsted divested a 50% stake in the Greater Changhua 1 wind farm to a consortium comprising CDPQ and Cathay PE. This move was followed by the commencement of full-scale offshore construction in March 2021. The initial phase of construction involved horizontal directional drilling at the wind farm site, which is located 35–60km off the coast of Changhua County. The works were undertaken to prepare the site for cable installation and foundation setting. By April 2022, the wind farms were generating their first power. The Greater Changhua 2a wind farm, with 294.8MW of capacity, remains entirely under Ørsted’s ownership. The wind farms utilise 111 Siemens Gamesa SG 8.0-167 Direct Drive turbines, reflecting the latest in offshore wind technology. Ørsted group president and CEO Mads Nipper said: “With today’s inauguration, we are celebrating a landmark achievement for Ørsted and for Taiwan. Greater Changhua 1 and 2a are our first gigawatt-scale offshore wind farms outside of Europe. They are also Taiwan’s first utility-scale far-shore wind farms and the largest of their kind in APAC [Asia-Pacific], reaffirming Taiwan as the frontrunner in the region. “In 2024, Ørsted has a record 7.6GW of offshore wind projects under construction worldwide, including our next big project in Taiwan, the 920MW Gre Taiwan

Energy Vault, NV Energy launch 220MW/440MWh BESS project in Nevada, US

The Reid Gardner two-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) project is situated on the site of a former coal-fired power plant. Energy Vault and NV Energy have started commercial operation of the Reid Gardner BESS in Moapa, in the US state of Nevada. This development marks a significant step in energy storage solutions as the 220MW/440 megawatt-hour grid-tied BESS is one of the largest in the state. Situated on the site of a former coal-fired electric generating facility, the Reid Gardner BESS project is a two-hour energy storage system. It has been designed to store and dispatch surplus renewable energy such as wind and solar power. The BESS is routinely charged and discharged daily. The stored renewable energy will be released during peak consumption times. Now operating at full capacity, the system is managed by NV Energy, utilising Energy Vault’s integration platform and energy management system, known as Vault-OS. Energy Vault was appointed by project owner NV Energy in December 2022. The company was tasked with designing a custom BESS solution and undertaking the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) work for the project. Energy Vault chief commercial and product officer Marco Terruzzin said: “The completion of the Reid Gardner Battery Energy Storage System, on budget and on schedule in a compressed time schedule, stands as a testament to Energy Vault’s commitment to the efficient delivery of sophisticated high-performance energy storage systems to customers like NV Energy. “We are grateful for NV Energy’s strong partnership throughout this process, from the start of planning until the commencement of operations today. “It is our goal at Energy Vault to serve as the energy storage company of choice for utilities, IPPs [independent power producers] and large energy users, and we are proud to deliver a system that will provide clean energy and grid resiliency to Nevada communities while also advancing the state’s carbon neutrality goals.” NV Energy renewables vice-president Jimmy Daghlian said: “We truly appreciated the dedication and quick work of Energy Vault to ensure the Reid Gardner Battery Energy Storage System came in on time and on budget. It was clear from the start that this project was a priority for Energy Vault, from the top levels of the company all the way down.” United States
