Project Name Climate-Resilient Integrated Southwest Project for Water Resources Management (formerly Southwest Area Integrated Water Resources Planning and Management Project- Second Additional Financing)
Project Detail The impact of the project will be enhanced economic growth and reduced poverty in rural areas of the selected districts in the southwest area of Bangladesh. The outcome will be enhanced productivity and sustainability of the selected existing flood control, drainage/irrigation (FCDI) systems. This will also contribute to increasing incomes and livelihood as well as raise quality of living standards of the local population, particularly women and socially disadvantaged groups. The project has following three outputs: (i) water management organizations (WMOs) capacity for sustainable water resources planning and management in the subproject areas strengthened, (ii) infrastructure facilities of FCDI schemes in the subproject areas restored, and (iii) institutional capacity for sustainable participatory integrated water resources planning and management strengthened. Project Rationale and Linkage to Country/Regional Strategy The proposed second additional financing of $71.00 million will increase the overall projects scope by scaling project interventions to nearby areas in Gopalganj and Madaripur districts. The proposed project will continue to adopt the successful approach developed under SAIWRPMP aimed at enhancing the incomes of the rural population by improving productivity, effectiveness and sustainability of existing underperforming FCDI schemes, enhancing livelihood opportunities and ensuring participatory water resource management for economic purposes. It will address constraints in agriculture, fisheries and livelihood development through holistic, gender-sensitive and socially inclusive participatory planning, development and management of water resources and delivery of associated support services.
