Project Detail |
The imperative for African nations to attain self-sufficiency in health products became apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic. Developed nations restricted distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, marginalizing African countries, and prompting a renewed commitment from African leaders to enhance local production. As of 2022, only 1% of Africas vaccine needs and 30-40% of overall pharmaceutical demand was produced locally.
Project Objectives
The project aims to address the critical challenges of limited access to technology and weak regulatory environment in Africa’s pharmaceutical sector in order to improve production of medicines and other pharmaceutical products in Africa, contribute to improved access to such products for Africa’s population including for poor and marginalized populations, and boost the continent’s capacity to respond to pandemics. Therefore, the project development objective is to strengthen access to advanced pharmaceutical technologies and improve the pharmaceutical regulatory framework in Africa.
Beneficiaries
The project is expected to yield extensive benefits (outputs and outcomes) across the region and continent. The APTFs cutting-edge pharmaceutical research and technology innovations are expected to enhance healthcare outcomes by providing access to advanced medicines and treatments, addressing prevalent diseases, and contributing to the continents overall health resilience. |
