Project Name Southeast Guwahati Water Supply Project
Project Detail Guwahati is the largest city in northeast India as well as a major economic center. The city has in recent years witnessed rapid urbanization; however, development of essential infrastructure has not kept pace with concomitant needs of its residents. In particular, the gap between water supply and demand is especially severe. The southeast zone of the city has no access to piped water supply service. The residents rely entirely on ground water or private water tankers to meet their daily water needs. Groundwater sources have been found to be contaminated posing significant health risks, while private water vendors charge high rates. Provision of safe, reliable, affordable, and sustainable water supply is hence of utmost importance in improving the living conditions of these residents. The Project involves construction of necessary water supply infrastructure and facilities to provide improved quality and regular water supply to the southeast zone of the Guwahati city. The major components of the Project include water intake system, treatment plant, reservoirs, and distribution network with household connections. The Project aims at providing access to 24×7 piped drinking water supply of not less than 135 liters per capita per day for a projected population in 2038 of around 520,000 people in southeast Guwahati.
