Project Detail |
The Additional Financing Project will continue to support the Uganda Cancer Institute to deliver high level education, clinical training and research and provide care for cancer management for Ugandans and the population of the EAC region. The Centres of Excellence will enhance the management of cancer through improved research and the creation of highly specialized professionals in diagnostics, treatment, and care of cancer cases. The project is expected to contribute to (a) improved access to quality and affordable postgraduate education programmes in oncology sciences, (b) improved access to timely, affordable, and quality specialised oncology services, and (c) improve Uganda’s leadership in specialized areas of oncology in the region. The original project has three components, which have been maintained as follows: (i) the creation of a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Oncology Sciences in Uganda, called the East African Institute of Oncology (EAOI), to address the shortage of qualified oncology professionals in the labour market and provide high quality cancer diagnosis and treatment, (ii) it supports the EACs regional integration programme in the areas of higher education and labour mobility and (iii) implementation of the project will require the provision of resources to ensure effective project management at national level.
Project Objectives
The project development objective remains the same, i.e., addressing the crucial labour market shortages of highly skilled professionals in oncology sciences and cancer management in Uganda and the EAC region in general. The specific objectives also remain the same, i.e., the Centre of Excellence in Oncological Sciences will enhance the management of cancer through improved research and, the creation of highly specialized professionals in diagnostics, treatment, and care of cancer cases.
Beneficiaries
The Centre of Excellence will further benefit regional member countries in the East African Community in oncology training, research, and service delivery. |
