A literary evaluation of Norway’s romantic nationalism
Using Norway as a case study, researchers will study the ideological dynamics of romantic nationalism. They will explore how the idea of nation relates to collective emotions and how these are harnessed, activated and constructed through literature and theatre. The ERC-funded NORN project will apply a highly innovative approach that combines cultural studies, affect theory, critical race studies and reception studies. Specifically, it will carry out a computational modelling of the entire 19th century literary field using machine learning. The project will reassess the literary historiography (as an explicitly romantic nationalist project) and re-evaluate the impact of transnational romantic performance culture on nation-building. |
