Project Name 2023-24 Northwest Regional Pavement Repairs and Breakaway Cable Terminal
Project Detail Beginning in September 2023, a regional pavement repair project will improve and preserve a five-mile stretch of State Route 18 near the Tiger Mountain State Forest. The project will seal cracks between Issaquah-Hobart Road Southeast and just south of Raging River. After pausing during the winter, the project will make pavement repairs on 33 ramps at 14 interchanges along Interstate 405 in Tukwila, Kirkland and Bothell, SR 509 in SeaTac, and SR 99/SR 599 in Tukwila, Seattle and Edmonds. A second regional project beginning in Spring 2024 will update 43 breakaway cable terminals, or ends of guardrails, along 10 divided highways in King, Snohomish, Skagit and Whatcom counties. The breakaway cables facing oncoming traffic will be replaced with terminals that meet the most recent federal guidelines and are designed to crumple when hit. This project also will replace the barrier that protects the columns at James Street exit from I-5 to meet current safety guidelines.
