The Abia State Integrated Infrastructure Development Project entails the rehabilitation of roads and erosion control infrastructure as well as the finalization of preparatory studies for solid waste disposal management in the cities of Aba and Umuahia in Abia State. These are an AfDB loan of up to USD 100 million and a Canada-African Development Bank Climate Fund (CACF) loan of up to USD 15 million to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Project will rehabilitate 58.03 km of roads in Umuahia and 190.43km of roads in Aba to asphaltic concrete (AC) standards of varying cross sections. One erosion control site, each in Aba and Umuahia cities will be reinstated in addition. A comprehensive preparatory study exploring the potential for private sector participation through public private partnerships (PPPs) will be carried out for the implementation of the waste disposal component of the project in the next phase.
Project Objectives
The State’s development objective is therefore being stifled by the inadequacy of urban infrastructure, especially roads and solid waste management infrastructure. The project development objective is to contribute to socio-economic development and poverty reduction in the cities of Umuahia and Aba, through improved and safe urban infrastructure systems. The project also aims at providing a comprehensive solid waste disposal system in the two cities which will remove the piles of rubbish on the roads. The effect of the solid waste disposal solution will be two-fold; (i) it will improve access on the road network, and (ii) reduce the health problems of pollution with the sanitary disposal of solid waste in the two cities. |
