With the support of ADA, the Austrian companies BIOTAN Austria GmbH and BGIS GmbH have been building a production company with a local processing plant for organic cashew nuts in Dar es Salaam since 2017. The cashew nuts are produced by small farmers who are organized in cooperatives.
Expected results
The aim of the project is to triple the amount of processed raw organic cashew nuts from the current 1,600 to 4,800 tons per year and to expand the value chain to include innovative products made from the pulp of the cashew apple and the shell of the cashew nut.
Organic premiums and fair trade prices will increase the average income of 1500 farmers and their families in Mkuranga District by 30%. In addition to the existing 300 jobs, an additional 200 jobs will be created in the BIOTAN processing plant - with a proportion of women of 80%. |
